You have started your band? Now you play regularly at a local pub or restaurant? You are getting regular invitations to play at local marriages or birthday parties? Well you would not want to spoil your success by playing a wrong song or playing your song incorrectly. You want to get it right first time and do not want to take chances. Then here are the tips to ensure that you always choose the right song and get it right first time.
First of all do not play the songs that you like, but play the songs that your audience likes. Knowing your customer is the secret of your success. Find out the latest hits and play those songs. Know the hottest stars and play their songs. Try and play these songs in different versions – say in group or in solos etc. Ensure that you always play the original version and do not try to add your tunes to it as it can put off the audience.
The next step is to learn the songs properly. If you decide to play Jim Hendrix ensure that you know how he plays. Learn his songs well. Ensure that you pitch them right. If you cannot learn a song do not play it. As long as you can make your performance flawless the audience is going to love you.
Next do not get carried away with the audience demands. Just because they are enjoying what you play does not mean that you play every song that they request, even though you have not learned them well. If a song that is requested is a bit difficult and you have not been able to master it, then replace the same with an easier one that you know. The audience won’t mind as long as it is played correctly. But if you mess up nobody will remember that you tried.
Next choose songs that go with your personality or the personality you are projecting on the stage. If you are in your bow tie playing for elite audience you cannot play hip hop music. Hence it is not just the dress but also your songs need to reflect the mood of the event. Ensuring that you sing the songs that match the atmosphere in which you are playing will allow your audience to enjoy and they will soon become part of your music.
There are several occasions when I have seen the band playing along while the audience are just not bothered. This is a disaster situation for the band and they will never be able to go beyond the confines of the restaurant or bar where they are playing. Inability to create a connection with your audience would ultimately lead to the death of the band. By choosing the songs correctly, you will be able to ensure that your audience loves you and wants you to play for them again and again.
