The origins of Gate 57

Posted by Deborah Moore on

Quite a few people have asked me how I came up with the name "Gate 57", and what the essence of the brand is. Great question, and I love telling people because it is, essentially, part of MY story, but the raison d'être of it may resonate with others.

I had the great fortune of growing up in, living in, and travelling to several different countries: Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Bali, Africa, France, Switzerland, Italy, and Canada to name some. A truly global upbringing!

Throughout my life, I was surrounded by amazing culture, sights and sounds, but it was (and still is) the colours and textiles that spark joy in me. Imagine the bold reds and yellows of spices, the saturated pinks and oranges of tropical flowers, or vivid purples and blues of hand woven batik. Each place I lived in, or visited, had a unique style that showed up in fabrics, accents, or just the way they lived everyday life.

Fast forward to 2018 after a long career in business strategy, marketing and coaching (and 3 kids): I was sitting in an airport awaiting my flight connection after a visit with my parents shortly before my father passed away and was reflecting on my childhood immersed in these incredible cultures. Even though I had always been a "business person" I secretly harboured a creative side, and had been imagining a dream of designing my own line of accessories (bags mostly) inspired by these global experiences.

And so, here I am, making a go of my dream - first curating beautiful pieces that represent my global life, but next will come the first pieces in my own line. I hope that you will share my vision of colour, life and elegant global style.

Oh, and that airport gate I was sitting at? Gate 57. A gateway to the big wide world.
